Nossa Familia Espresso Bar– Dec. 22, 2013

After last week’s successful trip to Barista Pearl, we returned to NW 13th and another quirky shop.  When Nossa Familia says Bar, that’s what they mean rather than “shop.”   This site is the company’s warehouse and roaster, and a small counter attached to the warehouse sells retail coffee and assorted gifts. Inside there are only 2 stools for sitting, so we brought in two of their outdoor chairs and huddled in a corner.  Nevertheless, we had a good time learning about the genesis of this Portland outlet for the Brazilian owners of Familia and their coffee plantation, and talking with the super-friendly customers who seemed like regulars, bantering with the two baristas on duty.   Finally of note, the bar is across the street from the Pacific College of NW Art’s other worldly bike shelter.    811 NE 13th   http://www.familyroast.com

Barista Pearl– December 15, 2013

The layout for Barista Pearl is quirky as the shop is located in a small cutout just after entering the Gadsby Building, with most of its seating and tables aligning the corridor that leads to the elevator.   Thus, there aren’t many of the homey amenities we usually associate with hanging out for long periods of time, other than the uniqueness of the setting.   Nevertheless we had spirited discussions on D’s son’s upcoming arrival from Peru, and H’s son’s family’s upcoming year in C. and S. America; snafus by the City’s Development Service staff; and our experiences with local theatrical productions.   539 NW 13th    http://www.baristapdx.com

Caffe D’Arte– Revisited Dec. 8, 2013

Despite a frigid 15 degrees, seven stalwarts came together to spend quality time together around a coffee shop table.   We originally fantasized of crossing the river to go to a shop downtown, but 2 miles out it was clear not all of us were properly protected from the elements, causing us to end our journey at Caffe D’Arte in the Lloyd district.  With lots of windows and good lighting, this European inspired shop – its TVs often turned on to European soccer – is a bright spot in more ways than one.  Its hangout limitation is that its interior seating is limited.  Still we hung out here significantly longer than in most places, probably not looking forward to getting back out into the cold.  Topics included frozen pipes and how Oregonians in the 1920s protected them, the heritage tulip tree outside, the standards for a heritage tree, the reasons behind coffee shop turnover, Willamette Week’s listing of new shops to visit, Alaska’s tax structure, the book The Righteous Mind’s analysis of conservative and liberal prisms and values, and the environmental costs of energy independence.     1615 NE 15th Ave.

Cathedral Coffee Shop – Dec. 1, 2013

This three month-old shop took the seven of us by surprise.    With great lights and windows, the latter possibly reclaimed, a definitely reclaimed barn door, bright yellow stool seats made out of wood stumps, brightly colored striped murals, a lending library, and a playful ambiance throughout, we felt we were in the midst of a great hangout discovery.  We wondered how they ever inlaid the wooden strips into their concrete tables, and then covered such diverse topics as the amazing formula for Roman concrete being lost for several centuries, modern insulation materials vs. past ones, the governance situation of our friends new co-housing development and why some such communities thrive while others struggle, and the changing  relationship of Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft.    7530 N. Seven Virtues — Revisited Nov. 24, 2013

It’s been a couple of years since two of us last visited Seven Virtues, which was then recently remodelled.  Today seven of us took the long, exhilarating way around Mt. Tabor to take advantage of clear skies and good company.   Physically, not much changed with the shop.  Though long and narrow, they’ve done a good job of taking advantage of the space and making it inviting and comfortable.  There are two couches in the back for people to gather and talk around a table; this is also an area for kids.  Otherwise it’s wooden tables and chairs, or stools along the window.   The counter has clean lines and is quite efficient.   Today’s topics included the origin of the term seven virtues (thankfully the smart phones corrected our wild guesses,) our upcoming New Years gathering with spouses, U of O’s fall to Arizona, and the psychology of being up or down for a competition.        5936 NE Glisan  http:// SevenVirtuespdx.com

Pearl Bakery– November 17, 2013

Though most of us had individually been to the Pearl Bakery before, we hadn’t visited as a bike group.  Our impetus today was its recent ranking as the 10th best bakery in the country.  Hang-out wise, its strengths are the full windows to the west and south, and the nice early morning buzz at other tables of friends obviously using the Bakery as a meeting spot.  Its challenges are limited seating options, which coupled with an industrial feel, could deter long discussions.   However, we do need to admit that they did not deter the five of us from energetic, often buoyant discussions on our growing lack of privacy, computer scams, the films Muscle Shoals and 20 Feet from Stardom, the chutzpah that is needed for most artists to be able to make a living from their craft, our cynicism over how bakeries can be ranked, how much of living to an older age we can control, and mushrooms, LSD and spirituality.       102 NW 9th    http://www.pearlbakery.com

Miss Zumstein Bakery & Coffee Shop– Nov. 10, 2013

Took a long round-about ride to get to this new neighborhood shop.   Miss Zumstein has some challenges in terms of hanging out for extended periods as it is a small space and seating options are limited.  However, in terms of pastries it gets high marks.   Discussion topics this morning included the growing enthusiasm from Cully residents re. revitalization efforts, our dismay at the health care act’s launch, and our responsibility to children/grandchildren to spread the word about environmental sustainability.   5027 NE 42nd    misszumstein.com

Ristretto Roasters/NE Couch November 2, 2013

After closing its original shop (admittedly a cubby hole,) in our central NE neighborhood, Ristretto replaced it with a new inner E shop near the Burnside Bridge.   Six of us ventured down and appreciated the industrial feel and clean lines of the new space, but also wished there were more seating options, as well as other indications that they wanted us to stay a while.   We took over the central table and discussion topics included T’s wariness around his son’s college interview later that day, the yurt that friend Joel had built in Homer, AK, and frustrations around the healthcare system’s rollout.    555 NE Couch    ristrettoroasters.com

Stumptown Downtown – October 27, 2013

Though two of us were familiar with this respected, hip shop from years of having worked downtown, two were new to it.   And all of us were disappointed that the music system felt extra loud this morning, making a relaxed conversation a challenge.   The layout and ambiance resemble a long, well lit, lively, artful corridor.    Thus, while Stumptown has successfully overcome the challenge of breathing life into a long rectangle, it now has to work with its staff to reduce the decibels.   128 SW 3rd    http://www.stumptowncoffee.com

Coffeehouse-Five– October 20, 2013

Had totally underestimated how comfortable Coffeehouse-Five’s interior would be to hang out in; otherwise we would have visited a lot earlier.   With its impressive molded concrete counter, great window space plus bright fixtures, some seating variety, and bright abstract art on walls,  it possesses key ingredients for relaxed and stimulating conversation.  Sunday’s topics included G’s experience last week leading a meditation retreat in a maximum security prison, the important upcoming GMO vote in Washington, M’s recent viewing of Ken Burns’ documentary on the Dust Bowl, and his conclusion that our country’s leaders have forgotten its important lessons.  740 N.
