Nov. 19, 2017– Guilder

Guilder.stairs.cntr

Guilder is one of those full service shops that also serves a limited menu of breakfast and lunch dishes, and alcohol, as well as pastries and hot drinks.   It’s located in a stylish, recently constructed two-story brick building on what was a parking lot, and Guilder uses both stories.  We found a lot to like, including the grand interesting views from upstairs, the lighting, and the shop’s variety of tables.  In an era of simple designs, though, we still have some trouble with blank walls, and believe some visual variety – maybe via wall hangings – would be make Guilder even homier, as would a variety seats, some of the soft variety.

Guilder.cntr

Because Guilder is only 1/2 mile from our Sunday starting point in NE, we three took a circuitous route through the Dekum Triangle and NE Alberta before reaching our destination.  Discussion topics included M’s new car key-fob not working, D’s experience of episodes where batteries have had an extra short life or have not worked  from the get-go; how some batteries have to breathe; M’s frustrations with Eveready customer service department; H’s wife P’s success scoring tickets at the box office for Hamilton after a 4 hr wait that started at 7 a.m., while most who tried to buy them on line were frustrated by the website crashing;  and H’s saga of of the earlier key-fob technology when you could lock your car with the engine still running, as H once did in the Canadian Rockies, and his self-flagellation while waiting to be rescued by the Chevrolet rental car’s roadside assistance program.

November 12, 2017– St. Honore Boulangerie/Downtown

With outlets in the residential areas of NW Thurman and SE Division, we’re very happy to see St. Honore’s prized pastries being made available to residents and visitors in the downtown center of town.  The spot they moved into has been totally rehabbed, so feels brand new with those strengths and weaknesses.  Its primary strength is how well its windows and light fixtures make it bright; its primary weakness is that it feels a bit small and institutional, making hanging out a challenge.

Today’s discussion topics included H’s kudos for Profile Theater’s focus on Quiera Alegria Hudes and her Pulitzer Prize winner, Water by the Spoonful; M’s kudos for the documentary Minimalism that documents the change in direction of two young professionals who stopped their financial careers in order to live more simply and tout those benefits to others; D then recounted his own history re teaching voluntary simplicity, and contradictions he discovered both personally, and externally in visiting the residents of Lake Titicaca in Peru.

Oct. 29, 2017– Oracle Coffee Co.

Oracle.wide

Oracle is the most recent coffee shop to open in the S. Waterfront area, it is vegan through and through, and thanks to Willamette Week we learned it’s co-owned by the drummer of the Fall Out Boys, a popular band the three of us were unfamiliar with.  In a new construction building, we liked the clean lines of the counter area, the light, and the particularly tasty food and drink.  However, its small capacity and stark walls, hindered its ability to make us feel comfortable for hanging out for an extended period of time.

Oracle.int

Topics today included updates on local climate change efforts, national political going-ons, our inability until today to have one of our spouses join us, and the varied success rates of the weatherpeople to forecast.

Oct. 15, 2017– Revisiting Tabor Bread

Tabor.Br.Int

On this crisp fall day, 4 of us met at Tabor Bread, one of our favorite bakeries for hanging out, not to mention their tasty pastries.  Unlike a lot of bakeries that thrive on high turnover, Tabor has more a more relaxed folk-music coffeehouse vibe and that helps with our feeling at home in terms of hanging out.  Unfortunately, today the shop was a bit smoky as something was lost in the oven and burned, resulting in the opening of several skylights and windows.

Topics today included M still recuperating from his being doored on his bike this summer, the new bureaucratic paperwork that Health/Human Services is requiring for his consultancy work as they increase subcontracting out to private industry middlemen, and  D turning 69 and thus his and R’s circuitous route to Tabor Bread.

October 1, 2017– Back to Groundwork/Hawthorne

Partly to use a couple of $1.00 off coupons we had scored at Groundworks’ NW roastery/shop,  partly to more consciously compare this newer shop that we do like with older first wave shops, and partly to learn what Groundwork – whose motto is “coffee, tea, community” – does in terms of local community work, 4 of us returned to the Hawthorne shop on this chilly, dry morning.

Groundwork.cntr3

We concluded in terms of our comparing spiffy brand new shops with older 1st wave ones, that while we are attracted to the clean lines of design and better lighting of the newer shops, the furniture is actually less comfortable than what we find in funkier older shops with their variety of seating options and knick knacks all around.  Thus, we feel more comfortable hanging out for extended periods in the 1st wave shops.

Groundwork.int

And in terms of Groundworks “community” presence, we were impressed with the ability of non-profits to use their space, their giving employees paid time off to work on behalf of the disadvantaged, and their donations of food.

Sept. 17, 2017– Groundwork Coffee Co./NW Vaughan

As stated when we visited Hawthorne’s Groundwork, Los Angeles-based Groundwork Coffee recently acquired Kobos’s roastery and shop in NW to add to its existing two PDX shops.  (Because of Groundwork’s emphasis on building community and organic products, we feel fine visiting them even though they do meet the definition of a being a chain.)   Admittedly, this NW site is  neither  pedestrian nor bicycle friendly, being on the busy Vaughan, and surrounded on the north by light industrial uses.  But the insides are worth a look.

GroundworkNW.int

Though we were comfortable here with the variety of contrasting images – half finished walls vs some complete, plus attractive art and plants – , we learned that even though now open for business, the interior will soon be undergoing a significant remodel.  Obviously, we’ll be interested in seeing the finished project.

Today’s discussion was international, (M couldn’t see the attraction of ex/pat draws like San Miguel Allende (over a Guanajuato,)  scientific, (G told us of his and wife D’s spur-of- the-moment decision to see the eclipse in a Silverton parking lot, and all of us oohed/aahed remembering the golden diamond,)  environmental, (fires in the NW despite record rains this winter, plus Southern hurricanes,) and political (DACA, and the debt ceiling extension- Houston recovery funding agreement.)

Sept 3, 2017– Revisiting Upper Left Roasters

One can classify the evolution of coffee shops in several different ways.  Our perspective views their first phase as being unpretentious, neighborhood-based spaces that served as local meeting places, and served coffee; the second phase keyed into the their  providing and/or creating artisan coffees and baked goods; and the current phase is characterized by their upscale design in newly constructed spaces or total rehabs,  upscale treats like avocado toast, and lunches.  The monthly rotating art on walls by neighborhood residents, funky fixtures, and soft couches  that were common during the early years are absent from the newer shops.

UpperL.Cntr

Upper Left Roasters takes place in a space that’s been totally rehabbed.  It’s bright, it’s modern, it has clean lines even with some exposed ceiling, and that makes it a comfortable place to hang out in even without the homey elements that were the hallmark of an earlier generation of coffee shops.

UpperLeft.Wide

This being their first get-together since the eclipse, M and H traded stories of their journeys to isolated settings in the Strawberry Mountains, and on the Alsea River respectively; the length of each’s total darkness – 2:00 vs 30 seconds; and animal reactions – significant in the Strawberries vs hardly noticeable along the Alsea.  H also told how post-eclipse he and wife P had an eclipse-like spiritual time in the California  Redwoods, and along the So. Oregon Coast.

Sept. 10, 2017– Revisiting Groundwork Coffee Co./Hawthorne

Groundwork.cntr3

L.A.’s Groundwork Coffee Co. – a roaster since 1990 and now operator of 11 So Cal outlets – bought 2 Tin Man’s shops on SE Hawthorne and SW 1st last summer.  Now they’ve also acquired the former Kobos roastery on NW  Vaughan.  On a December visit to the Hawthorne shop we really appreciated its spacious, bright, craftsman-like layout, array of organic coffees and teas, and stated commitment to build community.   This being summer we tried out their outdoor picnic benches, but found them not as stimulating as their interior seats, having been spoiled recently by visiting a couple of more comfortable patios.  Nevertheless, Groundwork’s commitment to creating community in L.A. and here, plus the lovely decor of its Hawthorne store, make Groundwork/ Hawthorne well worth a visit.

H, G, and part-time Portland resident C nevertheless had a good deal to catch up on, and enjoyed a stimulating hour-plus discussion outside at a sidewalk table.  When not in Portland, these past 7 months C along with his sister have been the primary caretakers in Denver for his failing mother; he related how she seemingly rejected a couple of earlier invitations to pass, how the spirit of her brother might have made an appearance to her, and then seemingly waited until both of her children were out of the room before passing away.  C and G then shared updates on two of their children, coincidentally both 40 and also both in WA, who’ve each faced recent challenges.   Meanwhile, H told how his oldest daughter is turning 40 this week, and he and wife P are being allowed to carouse with younger family/friends on their ritualistic pub crawl this Sat.

August 13, 2017– Revisiting See See’s Coffee Shop

SeeSee.ext

Within See See’s Motorcycle building is a coffee outlet that serves as a model for being a meeting place for a particular clientele, (or neighborhood.)  Roughly half of its customers seemed to be motorcyclists on the times we’ve visited, even though the cycle shop didn’t open for another hour.  Layout-wise, not much has changed since out last visit as the shop and outdoor tables were bustling with customers who seemed to be friends, colorful helmets were on full display inside, interesting murals were on the walls, and in the middle was a functional counter womaned by smiling baristas.

SeeSee.wall

Joining the 4 of us regulars was H’s friend B, who resides in France 9 months of the year but spends August-October on the coast in Waldport.  Discussion topics ranged far and wide: B gave us the latest on Pres. Macron and his wife, as well as France’s view on America’s declining standing in the world; J told of his and wife R’s upcoming Sept trip to The Netherlands, England and Spain – not France – and what remains on their to-do list, such as scoring tickets to an English Premier League soccer match ;  M laid out his backpacking group’s plan to go to the Strawberry Mtns for the eclipse; H told of his backpacking group’s recent trip to the Trinity Mtns, the toll the 100 degree days took on almost all while hiking in, the 3 days of thunderstorms that came after the temperature dipped into the 90s, and how 80 year-old Andy from VA amazingly was stronger on the  last day of the trek than the first; and E related that with his wife and kids visiting family, he’s been able to be more of his natural eccentric, such as walking the 8 miles to get to Sellwood from Cully.

July 30, 2017– Revisiting Jet Black, Yet Again

Unprecedented for the biking/coffee shop group, this was H’s 3rd trip to the same shop this month.  Each time he persuaded a different bike member to go, still giddy that the Jet Black owners would invest time and money to open a stylish vegan coffee shop in the neglected Gateway neighborhood.

jetblack.7-23

JetBlack.patio

Today’s discussion between M and H revolved mostly around each’s plans for the upcoming eclipse.  M and his wife J just came back from camping out and exploring the Strawberry Mtns where M plans to go for the eclipse, but staying away from Strawberry Mtn itself which may be overrun with campers/visitors; a worker there suggested an alternative out-of-the-way viewpoint, circuitous to reach but most likely perfect for viewing the eclipse.  H and his wife P, meanwhile, are visiting friends who though based in France, spend 3 months each year in Waldport; they have a lovely, relaxing deck overlooking the Alsea Bay.  Admittedly, Waldport may only receive 30-45 seconds of total blackness, but it’s fine for H and P in order to avoid the madhouse crowds; their only worry is what plan B will look like in case Waldport is fogged over that morning.
