Water Ave. Coffee Revisited 3-31-13

Twas a glorious morning and a couple of today’s riders were belting out “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” as we were taking in the flowers, smells, and stimulating sunshine.   Water Ave. Coffee did a great job in its rehab of a light industrial space on the Central Eastside.   Though not large, the layout with an elbow for customers around the counter and roasting area, doesn’t feel cramped.  The bright surroundings, space’s layout and dimensions for prep vs. seating, and good vibe, makes it conducive to good discussions.   1028 SE Water Ave.

Rilassi Coffeehouse and Tea- Revisited March 10, 2013

Rilassi’s remains the most ornate destination of the 90+shops we’ve visited, with a fountain, curved stairway, large angelic paintings, and lions guarding the front entry.   While we enjoy the unusualness of the ornate trappings, we’d like to see some  homey touches – additional seating options, magazines to read/games to play, et. al. – that make other shops more inviting to hang out in.   3580 SW River Parkway   http://rilassicoffeehouse.com/

Green Beans Coffee and Tea- – March 3, 2103

Green Beans is an unpretentious narrow shop with an unexpected  room to the side, that because of its step down, no windows, and low-ceiling feels like a cozy cavern or kids’ clubhouse.   With well used comfy chairs, this room is fun to hang out in; the main section of the shop, though, can feel a little crowded.     2327 E Burnside

Blue Kangaroo — Revisited Feb. 17, 2013

Three of our stalwarts, not to be denied when their original Sellwood destination was closed, opt for Blue Kangaroo, one of our favorites.   It seems to we NE residents that the Kangaroo accurately captures the independent and homey feel of Sellwood.   Today it was not only an exhilarating ride to Sellwood via the Esplanade, but the trip gave us an opportunity to check out the new bridge and return on the west side.   7901 SE 13th.   http://bluekangaroocoffee.com/

Spielman Coffee Roasters- – Feb. 10 and 24, 2013

Though Spielman is a small roaster, and though their small space doesn’t allow for leisurely hanging out, the draw for us is the love they put into making high quality bagels. Every style of bagel we’ve chosen seems to have an interesting surprise in its recipe, which the owner is glad to share. Truly a DIY operation.   2128 SE Division

Dragon Fly Cafe- – Revisited Feb. 3, 2013

So glad that E. was able to spend 90 early morning minutes with us on his 42nd birthday, before meeting his family at Lower Macleay Park in NW, we revisited a favorite that’s not too far away to the trailhead.   With its mixture of comfy sofas, quirky lamps and mirrors, Dragon Fly is an inviting place to hang out, even though it’s not very big.  Friendly service and homemade pastries add to its charm.    2387 NW Thurman

Southeast Grind — January 27, 2013

Located on the north side of Powell close to 12th, makes access to this unpretentious 24-hour shop a bit of challenge. But it’s worth the extra effort due to the hominess inside. With games to play, books to read, many home baked goods, a fireplace, and lots of seating options, it conveys the owner’s desire for patrons to relax and hang out.  1223 SE Powell.  Southeastgrind.com

Caffe Destino – – Revisited 1-16-13

Visiting shops around the City sometimes results in our not visiting local shops for a couple of years.  A 2013 revisit to Destino showed us the positive updating that had occurred here: a nice mixture of sofa, stools and round tables, plus a new bakery case, have helped make this cozy spot even more inviting.       1339 NE Fremont

Posies Bakery & Cafe – Jan. 13, 2013

On this cold Sunday morning we took off for Kenton – hitting a thin layer of snow on Denver.   Our revisit showed us that Posies had changed its thematic course over the past couple of years, though not to any detriment for those of us who like hanging out. The shop now has less visually stimulating antiques, but more comfortable seating options. Posies was a pioneer in setting aside room and toys for accommodating kids, and it still serves them well, though at times it might feel a bit too hectic.  http://posiescafe.com/wp/    8208 N. JoLa Cafe — Revisited on Jan. 4, + June 30 2013

This was another instance where second and third visits were very rewarding.   Our initial take was that JoLa’s contained most of the ingredients for a relaxing hangout: lots of striking art on walls, a variety of seating options, and good lighting among them. But the service on our initial visit was a little tentative. What we found on follow-up visits was a THRIVING shop with quality staff, taking advantage of the their original assets.   5915 SW Corbett    http://jolacafe.com/
