Nov. 15, 2015: Revisiting Caffe Umbria

On a cold, crisp Sunday morning, today’s six riders  crossed the Broadway Bridge into NW, and entered into a dense fog, so thick we couldn’t see the Columbia River below. So surreal and claustrophobic it was, and so magical on the return two hours later when the sun was out and the river appeared crystal clear. We did land safely in NW, having a fun time snacking and jawboning at this Italian themed warmspot.

The core of Umbria is bright with clean lines due to lots of natural light and bright lights around the ample-sized counter.  The nook extension to the side has less window space, but is comfortable to hang out in thanks to soft cushioned benches.

Today’s group discussion started with J’s positive report on visiting the Air and Space Museum in McMinnville; talk of Evergreen Aircraft’s former CIA and Nicaragua history; the humorous sharing of successful and unsuccessful Thanksgiving dishes from the past; the outlook for the Timbers playoff games; and positive achievements with regard to a couple of recent renewable energy projects.

Revisiting Papaccino’s: October 4, 2015

The five of us, on this slightly chilly early morn, had a very stimulating ride out the relatively new SE 53rd bikeway, to gawk at all the new development on Woodstock, and revisit a shop that appears to us to have made extra efforts to provide a variety of opportunities for its clientele to sit and stay a while.

With vivid murals inside and out, varied seating possibilities, and super frendly staff that seem to really enjoy serving the regulars, it feels like the clientele are coming to their 2nd home.   Of course, having a sense of humor helps.

Among our topics were the latest on T’s two college-age children; the latest outrageous statements from Donald Trump and his wannabees, our appreciation for what Bernie Sanders has attained, and our wonderment how Papaccino’s new exterior mural could already show the Tilikum Crossing Bridge and the Milwaukie Max line.

Seven Virtues/Sandy: September 13, 2015

At the triangle block of NE Sandy and 28th, pioneering developer Kevin Kavanagh has just rehabbed an unsightly, neglected building into a mecca for foodies, with each of the Zipper Building’s establishments serving food.  The exterior of the building is surrounded by tall wooden slats that change design depending on the direction one looks at the building.

At the point of the triangle is our coffee shop destination, the brand new Sandy outpost for Seven Virtues whose mothershop is on NE Glisan at 60th.

There’s a challenge in making such a awkwardly shaped, and small, space inviting.  And thus the 4 and a half of us chose to sit at the picnic table and bench on the sidewalk rather than stay inside.   Maybe over time the shop will be able to find a way to make the inside as alluring as the the outside architectural designs.

Because the site is relatively close to where we congregate, we took the scenic route via SE Hawthorne to arrive here.   And with the sun shining on us through most of the route, we were in talkative mode once we arrived: how does a project like this pencil out; what can Cully learn from it; what kind of joint promotions are possible among the tenants; what can be done to make it more comfortable.    2705 NE Sandy     Sevenvirtuespdx.com

Revisiting The Arbor Lodge: August 16, 2015

With only a 2 and a half months left to take advantage of the Chinook Book’s varied coupons, we’ve been using our Sunday outings to revisit several shops for which we have such coupons.  In 2015 Dragonfly had the most generous Chinook offering, but a free cup of coffee alone, thanks to the Chinook Book, is enough for us to look forward to saying hi to Bipartisan, Extracto, Water Ave., Floyd’s, and Arbor Lodge, which this month is celebrating its fourth birthday.

It’s fun to see that the Arbor Lodge has become an institution for its community, as it looked like at least half of its tables were being used by individuals who were using the Lodge as a meeting spot.  As we mentioned when we first visited the Lodge three years ago, it is very inviting place to go, but its limited size and layout could impede folks from having long, conversations.

For the three of us, this morning’s discussion centered on each of our summer experiences in the Wallowas: how easy/difficult to access our campsights, how many people we came across, how much snow has been lost compared to past excursions, how far we traveled to be 600 steps from the lake in order to have a fire, how fit we felt in our 60s, and whether using pack animals to tranport our gear was in our future.

The Rockin Frog Revisited: August 2, 2015

H has ex-pat friends living outside of Geneva, who in their retirement now spend 2-3 months a year in Waldport.   As one of them, the distinguished international jetsetter Monsieur Bill, was visiting and curious about our Sunday morning outings, D and H took him to the Rockin Frog for a great example of a quirky, relaxed atmosphere that – we feel – aids our morning converstaions.

This morning we were lucky to score the Frog’s library. The Frog has other comfortable areas in which to hang out  – the living room/counter area has a fireplace and soft chairs, there’s a room with games to play towards the back, and there are a series of nooks out back – but the library is our favorite.

Since B spent 30 years with the International Labor Organization, and D in his youth was a member of the IWW, this morning’s discussion focused initially on the struggles of the American and international labor movements, then morphed into the weirdness that is the Republican primary circus.     To say the least, the discussion on both topics was spirited.K7A24E514B3BF2_1000425

July 19, 2015: Revisiting Dragonfly Coffee House

It seems that after having sampled 138 different independently owned coffee shops these past four years, we’re currently into a  pattern of alternating visits to old favorites with visiting new shops.  Long-time favorite Dragonfly in NW was today’s destination for the three of us, and again it did not disappoint.

The shop possesses an array of interesting chandeliers, along with quirky windows and mirrors, that are visual delights.  That coupled with a variety of seating options, homemade pastries, an obvious commitment to environmnetal sustainability, and a bike corral, make the shop a wonderful place for us to hang out in, even though it’s a relatively small space.

Engaging topics today included each of our summer backpack plans – two are going to the Wallowas,  plus one is also going to the Canadian Rockies and the third is heading to the Three Sisters; the confounding issue on NE 42nd which is striving to attract new commerce, but not competition for its existing restaurants, and is now faced with a proposal from a successful restauranteur with a new upscale pizza outlet that might hurt two existing businesses; and the crazy housing prices that are making Portland even more unaffordable for many long-time residents.

July 12, 2015: Upstream Coffee + Eatery

With a friend this morning swimming three miles in the Willamette as part of an 11 mile relay team, two members chose a shop along the River to hopefully cheer her on.  Upstream Coffee + Eatery is located in the former Leaf and Bean site, apparently with a new owner and some remodeling of the counter, amidst the pedestrian path and string of shops south of the blues festival bowl.

It’s a small shop, so there’s some pressure not to hang out inside for too long.  But Upstream also has access to picnic benches along an espalanade overlooking the Willamette, and on these benches it’s easy to feel carefree and hang out.

Two topics dominated today’s conversation.  The first was about our admiration for swimmer Mona – and her cohorts, some of whom were swimming all 11 miles – to take on this challenge, – and for organizers of this event and the Big Float who are dedicated to make the Willamette accessible to the public at large.  The second was debriefing on the  CD release party we both attended at the White Eagle three days before, for a primarily-based Bellingham band that is co-led by Sammy, one of our friends’ children, who is also an oil painter. Again, the word “admiration” was used a lot to describe his artistic endeavors.

June 28, 2015: Revolucion Coffee House

Two members biked cross town to sample this outpost of Revolucion, which is located in the new Portland Mercado on SE Foster at 72nd.   Though the Mercado doesn’t officially open till 9:30 on Sundays, Revolucion opens at 7:00.

Revolucion has some very interesting artistic and colorful touches in its ordering area, but you don’t see them when you are sitting down as it uses the indoor and outdoor tables/chairs of the Mercado itself for its customers.  The indoor seating felt too  institutional-like, so we enjoyed the big wooden picnic chairs outside.

Topics today included H’s upcoming return to the Canadian Rockies after 16 years; M’s recent epidemiology meeting in Boston, and the history of how this annual conference morphed to become more inclusive of practitioners rather than just upper management;  M’s daughter Lauren’s 1,500 mile bikeride through the northwest; and a comparison of how our bucket lists were so different from each other.

May 17, 2015: Good Coffee

Good Coffee, although being relatively small in floor space, has an awe inspiring amount of variety in its newly built site.   Very stylish, the shop has lots of seating options, including a table that feels quite secluded; the walls have a craftsmanlike wood stucture that shows off an array of attractive items, in addition to coffee cups and supplies; and there’s lots of glass to make the shop feel airy and bright.   We sat on the couches, though, and had to lean far forward in order to have a good discussion.

G00d Coffee.wideGood Coffee.int1Good Coffee.ext

But a good discussion we did have, talking about two local theater productions we liked, that were in the similar genre: The NW Classical Theater’s Goodnight Desdemona in which which a fictional struggling academic plays out in her mind how characters from Romeo and Juliet, and King Lear, would respond similarly to certain events;  and Post 5’s raucous, sometimes over-the-top, production of 12th Night.  Staying in the arts, we then covered the “everybody reads book,” The Residue Years, which we thought was a bold choice given the in-your-face language and senstive topic of addiction.     4747 SE Division     http://www.goodcoffeepdx.com

May 3, 2015- Arleta Library Bakery & Cafe

Adjacent to the Space Monkey Coffee Shop and across from the Mt. Scott Community Center, the library’s priority is to be a bustling sit-down breakfast and lunch spot.   That lesson hit home when we went to the counter to order and were told we’d actually have a waiter take our orders.  As weekly coffee shop goers for the past five years, we were a bit out of our element.

Today’s discussion topics focused primarily on 2 topics: our pleasure that the recently opened Mercado down the street on Foster appeared to be successful, and our frustration with the racism and classism that still exists in our community that prohibits many – including an acquaintance of M’s – with one-time legal troubles from finding suitable employment.
