N- DiPrima Dolci Trattoria & Italian Bakery 1936 N. Killingsworth Visited in 2010, re-visited Dec. 30, 2012

An Italian bakery/dinner spot that’s not listed on some coffee shop lists, but which we like it a lot. The ethnic flavor (and treats) are stimulating, plus the owner invested in N. PDX when chancy. Backyard seating area in summer is a treat. – 3 cups http://www.diprimadolci.com/ 4 mi.

N- Madrona Hill Cafe 5937 N. Greeley Visited in 2011,  Revisited March, 2017
Very glad to see the shop has been refurbished sometime over the last 6 years.   New tables/chairs, art on walls, and better menu plus expanded bakery options now make MHC a much more inviting place to hang out.  -3 cups 4.5 mi.

Muddy’s Coffeehouse 3560 N. Mississippi Visited 2011 A fun breakfast/lunch spot – as well as coffeehouse – in an unpretentious renovated home. Entering the front door you look straight into the kitchen where pastries (as well as breakfasts) are baked. The room to the left has a little more privacy and is a comfier spot to hang out and chat than the main room. http://muddyspdx.com/ -3.5 cups. 2.5 mi.

N- Posies Bakery and Cafe 8208 N. Denver Visited in 2011, Revisited 1-16-13 3.5 cups- We learned on this revisit that Posies had changed its thematic course over the past couple of years, though not to any detriment for those of us who like hanging out. The shop now has less visually stimulating antiques, but more comfortable seating options. Posies was a pioneer in setting aside room and toys for accommodating kids, and it still serves them well, though at times it can get a bit loud. http://posiescafe.com/wp/ 5 mi.

NE- Caffe Destino 1339 NE Fremont Visited in 2010, Revisited 1-16-2013 A 2013 revisit showed us the positive updating that had occurred over the last 2-3 years: a nice mixture of sofa, stools and round tables, plus a new bakery case help make this cozy spot even more inviting. -3 cups 1 mi.

NE- Delphina’s Bakery 4636 NE 42nd Visited 5-6-12 3 cups- Adjacent to the bakery, this cozy retail shop has a wide selection of pastries, and interesting art on the walls. Because of relatively smaller size, seating options are limited. http://delphinasbakerycafe.com/ .5 mi. dir, 7.5 mi. indir.

NE- Fleur de Lis Bakery and Cafe 3930 NE Hancock Visited in 2010, revisited in 2012 3.5 cups- Nice sized facility with room to move around in, and lots of window area, that results in a comfortable/relaxed setting. On last revisit was disappointed that an area for kids had been removed. http://fleurdelisbakery.com/ 1 mi.
Henry Higgins Boiled Bagels    Formerly 5222 N. Sacramento     Now closed      Visited June 16, 2013For a short period of time, Henry Higgins leased out this space for weekends for its retail trade.   Long story, short: the bagels were very good but the former space wasn’t conducive to hanging out.  Hopefully their new space will be.  http://www.hhboiledbagels.com
NE- Jim & Patty’s Coffee 4951 NE Fremont Visited in 2010, revisited in 2012 3 cups- Bubbly, popular community meeting spot with a wide selection of pastries. Could add other homey elements. http://jimandpattys.com/ .5 mi.

NE- La Petite Provence Boulangerie & Patisserie 1824 NE Alberta Visited in 2011, revisited in 2012 3 cups- Mostly a restaurant/French bakery, whose décor transports you elsewhere. That relaxed feeling leaves, however, when the crowds arrive. provence-portland/com/ 1.5 mi.

NE- Random Order Coffeehouse and Bakery 1800 NE Alberta Visited in 2010, revisited in 2012 3 cups- Hard to believe that such tasty pies/pastries are produced in such a small space. This smallness is cozy when it’s not crowded, but not good for hanging when it is. http://www.randomordercoffee.com/ 1.5 mi.

NW- The Clearing Cafe & Bakery 2772 NW Thurman Visited in 2011 3 cups- Clearing has a friendly, cozy ambiance with good lighting, art on walls, and treats. Spatial layout of door/counter/seats, however, feels a bit cramped. http://www.theclearingcafe.com/ 5.5 mi.

NW- Lovejoy Bakers 909 NW Lovejoy First visited in 2011, Revisited 11-25-12 4 cups- One of the few hangouts we visited that’s in a brand new building. With primarily stools for sitting around a common table or along the windows, the feel is part European, though we recognize Lovejoy’s interior design can be easily replicated in many downtowns that are enjoying a rennaissance. What can’t be easily replicated is the exterior boardwalk and the magical feeling we get from relaxing on their Adirondack chairs. http://lovejoybakers.com/ 4 mi.

NW- Saint Honore Boulangerie 2335 NW Thurman Visited in 2011 3 cups- Maybe the first French bakery in Portland, the shop feels cozy and rustic, but isn’t designed to hang out for very long. http://www.sainthonorebakery.com/ 5.2 mi.

SE- Bipartisan Café 7901 SE Stark Visited in 2010, revisited in fall of 2012 4 cups- Very inviting, relaxed community meeting spot with fresh baked goods, soups/ sandwiches, and political memorobilia as a theme. We bikers appreciate the corral for parking. Since last visit have added another couch for more relaxed talking. Definitely a favorite. http://www.bipartisancafe.com/ 4.5 mi.7 via Tabor

SE- Caffe Pallino 3003 SE Division Visited 7-22-12 3 cups- A full scale – from coffee and home baked pastries to hard liquor – restaurant in a well lit/glassed setting. Design lines are very clean. While hanging out early on Sundays is easier, assume it’s more of a challenge when restaurant is busy. http://caffepallino.com/ 4 mi.

SE- Crema Coffee and Bakery 2728 SE Ankeny Visited in 2011 3 cups- Crema’s a provider of pastries for many neighborhood shops, so it bakes well. But space/furniture isn’t as relaxing as elsewhere. http://www.cremabakery.com/ 2.7 mi.

SE- Happy Sparrow Cafe    3001 SE Belmont  Visited 6-9-13

SE-  Little T American Baker 2600 SE Division Visited in 2011, revisited 8-10-13

3.5 cups-  Happy Sparrow is a cozy shop that has staked its success on offering a wide assortment of the Czech pastry kolache – savory and sweet – rather than typical coffee shop offerings.   We liked the kolaches, the personable owners, the shelves of books and games.  The only downside is that the shop is small and that may be a problem for hanging out when it gets busy. http://www.happysparrowcafe.com

3 cups-   Little T is in a well appointed space with good light, clean lines, and tasty treats. However, it could benefit from some “homey” touches as despite the light and cool vibe, poor acoustics and limited seating options hinder  hanging-out. http://www.littletbaker.com/

SE- Rain or Shine Coffee House 5941 SE Division Visited in 2011, revsited Sept. 30, 2012 3.5 cups- A revisit after 18 months – brought on by a flat tire – resulted in our seeing the wonderful small changes (reading magazines, board games, soft couches) that have taken place here. Each sends an invitation to come hang out in our brightly lit refuge with home baked pastries. http://rainorshinepdx.com/ 4.2 mi.dir.6 mi. via Mt. Tabor

SE- Southeast Grind 1223 SE Powell Visited Jan. 27, 2013 Located on the north side of Powell close to 12th, makes access to this unpretentious 24-hour shop a bit of challenge. But it’s worth the extra effort due to the hominess inside. With games to play, books to read, many home baked goods, a fireplace, and lots of seating options, it conveys the owner’s desire for patrons to relax and hang out.  3 cups  Southeastgrind.com 5.5 mi.

Sweetpea Baking Co.  Sept. 8, 2013

Sweetpea specializes in making tasty vegan pastries, which it very good at.   The hang-out ambiance of its shop could be improved by more homey touches, but such is the case with many bakeries who make their retail space a secondary concern.   sweetpea baking.com   1205 SE Stark  3.5 mi.
