October 28, 2018– Little Red’s Bakeshop and Cafe

We’re used to bakeries having to a certain amount of heft and seriousness in order conduct business.  But here on the edge of downtown – on the west side of I-405 at 14th – we have a small bakeshop with seating for 12 and this week at least decked out in full Harry Potter regalia;  (we’re told that for one Halloween week each year the staff is allowed to display their memorobilia and show movies (mutedly) on TV.)   Anyway, the limited seating alone makes Little Red’s a challenge for hanging out for very long, but it’s definitely worth a visit or two.

The Potter theme led the three of us toward tales of our own reading to children and grandchildren.   DS is now reading Harry Potter to one grandchild after having read Tolkien’s Trilogy to his now grown sons;  H remembers the Lion Witch and Wardrobe, M that and the Tolkiens.  The shooting at the Pittsburgh synagogue, though, quickly brought us back to earth’s reality and discouragement over how little progress there’s been on gun limits since Parkland.
