October 1, 2017– Back to Groundwork/Hawthorne

Partly to use a couple of $1.00 off coupons we had scored at Groundworks’ NW roastery/shop,  partly to more consciously compare this newer shop that we do like with older first wave shops, and partly to learn what Groundwork – whose motto is “coffee, tea, community” – does in terms of local community work, 4 of us returned to the Hawthorne shop on this chilly, dry morning.

We concluded in terms of our comparing spiffy brand new shops with older 1st wave ones, that while we are attracted to the clean lines of design and better lighting of the newer shops, the furniture is actually less comfortable than what we find in funkier older shops with their variety of seating options and knick knacks all around.  Thus, we feel more comfortable hanging out for extended periods in the 1st wave shops.

And in terms of Groundworks “community” presence, we were impressed with the ability of non-profits to use their space, their giving employees paid time off to work on behalf of the disadvantaged, and their donations of food.
